Featuring the three newest Master Sommeliers from Seattle, all of whom passed in September 2018

Elton, Tyler and James
Elton Nichols, MS
Master Sommelier Elton Nichols is the Vice Director of Wine at Canlis Restaurant in Seattle, where he has been a part of the James Beard award winning wine team since 2013. Prior to his time at Canlis, Elton led the wine teams at the Pacific Club in Hawaii, and various restaurants in the Seattle area including Pearl Bar and Dining, Chandler’s Crabhouse, and Spazzo Italian Grill and Wine Bar.
When he’s not studying wine, Elton likes to spend his time running. A fan of a yearly Tough Mudder challenge, he runs marathons annually to support St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and 5ks for the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer. Elton lives in Seattle with his wife Kris and two sons, Max and Troy.
Tyler Alden, MS
Master Sommelier Tyler Alden fell into the restaurant industry by chance in the fall of 2001, spending the majority of his early career at the Wild Ginger Asian Restaurant & Satay Bar in downtown Seattle. Over the years he has assisted guests as a server, supervisor, manager, lead trainer, service captain, and Sommelier.
In 2011, he was recruited as Assistant Wine Director for the Purple Café & Wine Bar, and passed his certified Cicerone examination in 2014. Tyler now serves as Education & Training Director for the Heavy Restaurant Group’s locations throughout the greater Seattle area. He also holds a degree in Business Administration/Finance from the University of Washington Foster School of Business.
James Lechner, MS
Master Sommelier James Lechner has been involved with restaurants for over 25 years. In 2009, James developed the wine program and helped open Bastille in Ballard with Chef Jason Stoneburner, Deming Maclise, and James Weimann. With the same group, he opened Stoneburner as a business partner in 2013. Lechner has traveled across the world to participate in various tastings and wine-related events. He sits on the Board of SommFoundation, a non-profit organization committed to providing educational opportunities to wine professionals.
Before his career in wine, Lechner earned a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry at the University of Washington and an Economics degree from Villanova University. He is very active on the board the Ballard Alliance, and regularly contributes to various charitable organizations, including Auction of Washington Wines, Auction Napa Valley, JDRF Dream Gala, and others. James lives in Shoreline with his two children, August and Charlotte, and his wife, Rebecca. In between work and home, you can find him pushing the pedals of his road bike or hiking up Washington’s incredible peaks.
